City of Caves
Entering the bright and airy Broadmarsh Shopping Centre, you would never guess the dark history that lies beneath it. Accessible through the upper mall shopping level, City of Caves is part of a complex 400-cave labyrinth dating back to the Dark Ages. These caves were most likely used as housing during and after the 11th Century until 1845 when such housing conditions were banned. The soft sandstone nature of the caves means that since then it’s been possible to use them as factories, air raid shelters and pub cellars amongst other things. The City of Caves experience allows you access to a variety of caves dedicated to different eras and uses, providing a family day out full of mystery, archaeology, wartime stories and medieval traditions.
Note: Temporarily closed, expected to reopen Spring 2012
