Lace Market
A central part of Nottingham’s history lies in the fine art of lacemaking. Named The Lace Market in 1847, Nottingham’s lace quarter is home to 19th century industrial buildings that were once the salesrooms and warehouses at the heart of the world’s lace industry. The majority of the area features typical Victorian architecture; red brick buildings line the streets alongside iron railings, old gas lamps and red phone boxes – it’s like stepping back in time. One of the finest sights not to be missed is the Adams Building, built for Thomas Adams who is renowned for his role in reforming the working conditions for ladies in the factory. There are guided tours around the Lace Market, during which you can learn the full history of the area from the experts.
