The sign above the door of Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem states that it was established in 1189 AD, which would make it the oldest inn in England. Famous for its sandstone cave drinking rooms and the caves that lie below it, the pub has a unique and charming character as well as many tales to tell. Just one is of the cursed galleon, a wooden ship that sits in one of the bars – legend has it that all who have cleaned it have met a mysterious death. Needless to say the landlords have now cased the galleon in glass, strictly not for cleaning. However, they do still allow women to sit in the antique chair which is claimed to increase the chances of conception!
